Mohegan Gaming launches digital division in online gaming push
Tribal gaming heavyweight reveals focus on global scaling and US igaming expansion
Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment (MGE) has launched a new igaming-focused division, Mohegan Digital, as the firm plots an expansion into the igaming vertical. The tribal gaming heavyweight, operating out of its flagship casino, the Mohegan Sun Connecticut, has said it wants to provide “cutting-edge” online gaming to the firm’s existing customer base as well as expanding and scaling the business globally. As a priority, Mohegan Digital will be primarily focused on the creation of an igaming offering for the Connecticut property following the legalization of sports betting and online gaming, which is set to become law on July 1. MGE has confirmed the appointment of Rich Roberts as the first president of the Mohegan Digital business, with Aviram Alroy appointed to the role of VP in charge of product. It is understood Alroy will lead the firm’s efforts on a day-to-day basis overseeing digital operations. Roberts will work closely with the executive team to create digital igaming IP for both local customers and Mohegan customers globally. He previously served as an executive business consultant for RSD consulting, a business focused on helping organizations enter the US sports digital media, regulated digital gaming, and esports markets. In the period prior, Roberts served as CEO of peer-to-peer social/skill sports gaming platform FaceOff, which operated in the US market. Speaking about the creation of the Mohegan Digital brand and the new appointments, MGE president Ray Pineault highlighted the expansion of sports betting and growth of igaming in the US as being the right time to launch the new digital division. “Over the years, Mohegan has made great technological advancements in the digital space, working with industry-leading partners to provide state-of-the-art advancements to casino and sportsbook online operations,” Pineault explained. “With Mohegan Digital, we are looking to expand and enhance these efforts to elevate the experience and deliver on our promise to provide world-class entertainment for our guests on a digital scale. “With Rich Roberts and Aviram Alroy at the helm, we are excited for what’s to come for Mohegan Digital,” Pineault added. Alroy has been a part of the Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment team since 2014 as the vice-president of interactive gaming, a division that Mohegan Digital now absorbs. In his new role as VP of product, Alroy will be accountable for product strategy, and developing and launching online sports betting, igaming solutions, websites, and mobile apps on behalf of MGE and its branded partners. Speaking about his new role, Alroy said: “It’s an exciting time to be working in the igaming industry, especially now that more states, including Connecticut, are going live with both sports betting and igaming together. “My years leading Mohegan Gaming and Entertainment’s interactive gaming division have equipped me with the necessary skills and vision to help usher in a new era for the brand now that we plan to enter not only Connecticut, but also Washington, Pennsylvania, the province of Ontario, and more states in the future,” he added.
