Microsoft plotting smartwatch market entry
Patent documents reveal detachable, fitness-themed device with capabilities including messaging
Microsoft is planning to compete with Google and Samsung with the release of its own smartwatch, newly released patent documents have revealed.
Documents filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office described a âWearable Personal Information Systemâ that comprises a small computer that can be attached to a wristband and worn as a smartwatch.
The device can also be docked with an external computer or inserted into other equipment to become a personal fitness recorder by measuring motion, location and heart rate.
It will also be capable of receiving and displaying messages, browsing using Microsoftâs Bing search engine and will also come with voice control through Microsoftâs new Cortana assistant, developed as a rival to Appleâs Siri.
The launch will rival Google, which has moved early to release details of its upcoming Android Wear OS with the first devices set to be launched later this summer.
Although details are not yet available Apple is widely expected to follow Google into the smartwatch market with the release of an iWatch, with details expected later on in the year.
Competition will also be provided by Samsungâs Galaxy Gear and Pebble smartwatches which are already available on the market.
