DCMS reshuffles UKGC commissioners with new appointments
Four new commissioners appointed for five years ahead of further regulatory changes
The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has appointed four new commissioners to the UK Gambling Commission for a term of five years.
Terry Babbs, Brian Bannister, Jo Hill and Sir Martin Narey will all now work within the UK regulator on a variety of regulatory projects.
Commissioners provide oversight of the UKGC to ensure that it complies with funding constraints and provides DCMS with up-to-date information regarding its management, strategy and governance.
They also play a significant role in setting the overarching strategy for the organisation and will make strategically significant decisions throughout the next five years.
UKGC chair Bill Moyes hailed the new appointments, adding they would bring a “wealth of valuable expertise” to the board of commissioners.
“Their collective experience will help us as we look to implement further protections for consumers and strongly regulate what is a fast-moving and innovative industry. I’d like to welcome them to the Commission and look forward to working closely with them,” said Moyes.
Babbs currently occupies several roles, including senior independent director at the General Dental Council, vice chair of the investment committee at charity Oxfam and serves as a non-executive director of the HMRC valuation office.
Bannister serves as executive director for strategic insight and influence at The Law Society and has worked at UK auditors KPMG and PwC in communications-led roles.
Hill works as executive director of strategy and risk at The Pensions Regulator and has previously worked at the Financial Conduct Authority, while Narey has previously worked in senior roles at the Prison Service, Probation Service and as CEO for Barnardo’s over a 15-year period.
