Dutch TV survey reveals lack of support for egaming legalisation
Survey examined Dutch attitudes to gambling online ahead of potential remote gaming bill
Just 34% of Dutch consumers want egaming legalised in the Netherlands, according to a new survey conducted by Dutch current affairs TV show EenVendaag.
The survey, of more than 21,000 respondents, revealed that 43% did not want egaming legalised, while 23% did not know or had no opinion on it.
Just 34% supported legalising the activity.
Alarmingly, only 38% of respondents knew that egaming was illegal, with 39% believing that egaming is fully legalised in the Netherlands and a further 22% of respondents did not know.
The survey also revealed that 67% of respondents felt that the Dutch government did not provide sufficient information on the laws surrounding egaming.
In addition, 56% of survey respondents believe that the government and regulators do not provide sufficient information about the risk of problem gambling, flying in the face of the Dutch Gambling Authorities stated objective of preventing gambling addiction.
53% of respondents had no confidence that online operators would identify at-risk individuals, while a further 35% felt little confidence that this would happen.
One of the measures being considered as part of egaming legalisation in the Netherlands is for individuals to provide their Citizen Service Number (BSN) prior to gambling online. The survey analysed whether individuals would be willing to do so, with 65% saying that they would be not prepared to provide their BSN.
