Gambling Commission calls for operators to “design-in” consumer protections
UK regulator lays out its 2018-19 strategy with a new business plan
The UK Gambling Commission has today called for operators to start “designing-in” customer protections, as part of the regulator’s new business plan for 2018/19.
The plan, which sets out the Commission’s priorities for the year ahead, is the first of three to be published over the Commission’s three-year strategy.
As part of the plan the Commission will be pushing the industry to start designing-in protections and control measures from the very start of product development
It also targets progress on understanding the public health impact of problematic gambling and improved interventions on potentially at-risk players.
Gambling Commission chair William Moyes said: “Our ambitious plans for the next 12 months and beyond are designed to enable us to continue to respond to emerging risks and issues in a way that balances consumer choice and enjoyment with the risks associated with gambling, and the impact on wider society.
“Our strategy and plans will deliver real change for consumers, the gambling industry and for us as the regulator. Our aim is to make gambling fairer and safer and to raise standards across the industry.”
As part of the plan, the regulator will also establish a standing focus group of consumers to test policy ideas as well as a panel to advise the Commission on digital technology developments.
“Together, we must now start the work to bring these plans to life,” Moyes added.
