Google guns for budget market
New Motorola smartphone comes pre-loaded with Android 4.3 and a £135 price tag
Google has made an aggressive move to take on the rise of Windows Smartphones with the launch of the £135 ($179) 4.5″ Moto G
The screen resolution has a pixel density of 329ppi, which is higher than the iPhone 5s, and the 4.5″ screen is larger than that available on the Windows 8 powered Nokia Lumia.
Google-owned Motorola billed the phone as a smartphone that “delivers a premium experience for a third of the price of current high-end phones”.
The phone lacks 4G capability, but offers GPS and bluetooth and runs on Android 4.3 and will upgrade to 4.4 (Kit Kat) in early 2014.
Early reviews have praised the phone and the stripped down OS with no bloatware from the manufacturer means it runs quickly on Android and battery life is good.
It remains to be seen if the phone can take a chunk out of Windows growing market share particularly in Latin America, but it’s a definite boost for developers focusing on the Android platform.
Moto G features include:
- A brilliant 4.5-inch HD display – the sharpest in its class – that goes edge-to-edge so you can enjoy movies, photos, video chats and more.
- Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor featuring a quad-core CPU
- Android 4.3 Jellybean, with a guaranteed upgrade to Android 4.4 KitKat at the beginning of 2014
