Swedish licence holders break £2bn turnover barrier
Report from Swedish Gambling Authority also found an increase in self-suspending bettors
Gambling firms with a Swedish licence recorded an annual combined turnover of SEK24.8bn (£2.03bn) in 2019.
The new figures come from a report published by the Swedish Gambling Authority Spelinspektionen (SGA) and are preliminary based on information derived from Skatteverket – the Swedish Tax Agency.
Turnover in Q4 2019 was recorded at SEK6.7bn (£547.4m), making it the period with the highest level of turnover in the year.
Online casino led the way with SEK14.03bn (£1.1bn) when the figures were broken down by vertical.
By the end of Q4 2019, 48,000 users had suspended via Spelpaus.se – the self-exclusion register for Swedish consumers. The figure of 48,000 marks an increase of 16% from Q3 2019, while at the end of March 2020, the total amount of self-excluders had grown to more than 49,000.
As of March 2020, 96 firms had active Swedish licences, with 70 of them licensed for online casino and online sports betting.
